Give it up for Paris Pan, the star of Cynthea Liu's Paris Pan Takes the Dare, on Inside the Character's Studio!

So what if it is a rite of passage for every seventh grade girl in town to spend a night in the woods? Paris Pan only just moved here, the woods are super creepy, and she has enough weirdness to deal with in her own family. Kyra Sellers on Inside the Character's Studio!

I'm super excited to host the awesome Kyra Sellers, the star of Barry Lyga's Goth Girl Rising, on Inside the Character's Studio!

Time is a funny thing in the hospital. In the mental ward. You lose track of it easily. After six months in the Maryland Mental Health Unit, Kyra Sellers, a.k.a. Goth Girl, is going home. Unfortunately, she's about to find out that while she was away, she lost track of more than time. Things seem normal at first. Roger's his typical, pain-in-the-ass fatherly self. Jecca and Simone and the rest of the goth crowd still do their thing. Valerie Leftman on Inside the Characters' Studio

I am so happy to have a chance to host Valerie Leftman, the star of Jennifer Brown's incredible Hate List, on Inside the Character's Studio!

As those of you who follow me on Twitter know, I fell in love with this book when I read it...and I really believe it's one of the best debuts of the year...possibly of the last few years. Hear me when I tell you that you should go out, buy a copy, read it, and take it to heart. I, for one, am trying my hardest to "see things as they are" after reading this incredible book.

Five months ago, Valerie Leftman’s boyfriend, Nick, opened fire on their school cafeteria. Shot trying to stop him, Valerie inadvertently saves the life of a classmate, but is implicated in the shootings because of the list she helped create. A list of people and things they hated. The list her boyfriend used to pick his targets.

Now, after a summer of seclusion, Val is forced to confront her guilt as she returns to school to complete her senior year. Haunted by the memory of the boyfriend she still loves and navigating rocky relationships with her family, former friends and the girl whose life she saved, Val must come to grips with the tragedy that took place and her role in it, in order to make amends and move on with her life.

Anna Reiley on Inside the Character's Studio!

Ok...it's no secret that I have a major friend crush on the fabulous Sarah Ockler. We've got some weird cosmic similarities that are seriously freaky-deaky. First, we're both named Sarah. Second, Sarah's husband grew up literally across the street from where my parents lived when they first moved to the US in Flushing, Queens, NYC. How did we discover this? Sarah actually *recognized* the spot where this photo was taken. While she was reading my blog. Which brings me eerie similarity #3--we're both awesome.

When people apologize for something they didn't do simply because they don't know what else to say, or when they try to force conversation just to fill the space so they don't have to feel awkward around you. I wish they would just be quiet, because sometimes there just aren't any words for something.

I don't curse that much, so I save it all up for the big one. ;-)

What sound or noise do you love?
The sound of Matt's voice reading to me. Some days I wake up and think of him and his voice goes hazy in my memory. I'm so scared of forgetting the sound of it.

Tires screeching, and the song that was playing that day... Casey Jones.

I think I'd like to work with other teens and kids who just need someone to talk to and listen to them, especially if they've gone through something traumatic. Maybe a counselor or social worker.

Hair stylist or makeup artist. I leave all things glamorous in Frankie's capable hands.

Today, I'm happy to announce that Wrenn Scott, the star of Leigh Brescia's's One Wish. Ok, let's start with how much I judge this book by its cover. And I judge it as AWESOME. But then I met Wrenn (and Leigh) and I judge it also by its author and main character. That's acceptable, right?

I think in general, I'm really impressed and inspired by people who have an artistic or creative side and who are in touch with it. Like my BFF Madison, for example, who is an ah-MAH-zing fashion designer! Not only does she know how to express herself through what she wears, but she also thinks about design and aesthetic as it relates to other people. She's always coming by my house with fun little scarves and belts or bags that she's "Maddie-ized" just for moi! (I mean, speaking of veriness, no?)

I also have a friend Jeremy who takes totally captivating photos and spends a lot of time blogging about things that he's passionate about. Check him out.

What turns you off?
Disloyalty=grossness. I am totally not down with friends who turn on other friends. I give a lot to the people I care about and expect the same in return.

For sure it's gotta be one of Madison's home-grown phrases. Probably, "holy Gabbana!" That cracks me up every time. Better than any boring old standard four-letter blahdity-blah, right? LOL!

The little chime from my computer that signals a comment on my blog (http://goldengirlspencer.blogspot.com) or an incoming email!

Oh, that's gotta be the alarm clock...or when my bratty baby sis is screaming her head off while I'm trying to relax...At times like that, one wonders what the nanny is getting paid for. :P

What profession would you like to attempt?
I've done some modeling for some of my mother's charity events, and even though it was a little stressful (some of those dresses are one of a kind, and you don't want to be damaging them in ANY way), it was a lot of fun to primp and pose for a crowd. So it could be fun to do more of that.

Of course, I also oversee our school's social planning committee, which is a huge responsibility, but it's amazing to put together a fantastic event for all of your friendlies. So maybe event planning could be my "thing?" Or even fundraising for charities of my own some day...Who knows? I've got plenty of time before I have to worry about stuff like--ew--the real world, right?

What profession would you not like to do?
As much as I love to blog, I don't think I'd want to be a professional blogger or gossip columnist! I like to keep my private thoughts set to private! I'll leave the public snarking for the Toni Barneses of the world...

Samar on Inside the Characters Studio!

This week on Inside the Characters' Studio, Samar, the star of Neesha Meminger's Shine, Coconut Moon.

Seventeen-year-old Samar -- a.k.a. Sam -- has never known much about her Indian heritage. Her mom has deliberately kept Sam away from her old-fashioned family. It's never bothered Sam, who is busy with school, friends, and a really cute but demanding boyfriend.

But things change after 9/11. A guy in a turban shows up at Sam's house, and he turns out to be her uncle. He wants to reconcile the family and teach Sam about her Sikh heritage. Sam isn't sure what to do, until a girl at school calls her a coconut -- brown on the outside, white on the inside. That decides it: Why shouldn't Sam get to know her family? What is her mom so afraid of? Then some boys attack her uncle, shouting, "Go back home, Osama!" and Sam realizes she could be in danger -- and also discovers how dangerous ignorance can be. Sam will need all her smarts and savvy to try to bridge two worlds and make them both her own.

Lush. I first really noticed it with the bath and beauty products store, but now I think it's my favorite word, EVER.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
To feel like I really belong somewhere. There's no question about it. And if I weren't there, people would notice that there was a big hole where I'm supposed to be.

What turns you off?
Ignorance. Definitely.

Sh*t. I don't know if it's my favorite, really, but it's the one I use the most :D.

What sound or noise do you love?
Windchimes. My mom has some in the backyard and when there's a soft breeze, you hear this little tinkling and it just soothes you.

People coughing up phlegm.

What profession would you like to attempt?
Astronomy. I'm not stellar at science (ha ha, get that? Stellar...? Astronomy...? Anyway), but I'm fascinated with the movement of the planets and the stars. There's SO much up there that we know nothing about.

Be a therapist working with domestic violence survivors. That's what my mom does and, even though she says she loves it, she comes out of her office looking totally stressed sometimes.

Cece Charles on Inside the Characters' Studio!

This week on Inside the Characters' Studio, Cece Charles, the star of Cynthea Liu's The Great Call of China.

Chinese-born, Cece was adopted when she was two years old by her American parents. Living in Texas, she's bored of her ho-hum high school and dull job. So when she learns about the S.A.S.S. program to Xi'an, China, she jumps at the chance. She'll be able to learn about her passion—anthropology—and it will give her the opportunity to explore her roots. But when she arrives, she receives quite a culture shock. And the closer she comes to finding out about her birth parents, the more apprehensive she gets. Enter Will, the cute guy she first meets on the plane. He and Cece really connect during the program. But can he help her get accustomed to a culture she should already know about, or will she leave China without the answers she's been looking for?

I guess you're trying to get me grounded.

What sound or noise do you love?
When it's real soft, I love listening to the river go by. Sometimes I think I can roll on with it, right out to the sea.

What sound or noise do you hate?
When wind gets up and cries in the trees? I don't like that. It crawls my back and makes me feel haunted.

What profession would you like to attempt?
Maybe I'd like doing something with books, like maybe collecting 'em, or fixing 'em or something like that. Keeping old stories alive.

What profession would you not like to do?
I watch Dirty Jobs with Ben sometimes, and I gotta tell you. There's about a thousand I don't wanna do.

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
It's all right.

I'm starting a new recurring spot on MacLeanSpace...Inside the Characters' Studio, in which I ask main characters in YA novels to answer the Pivot Questionnaire. First in the hot seat, Celeste Harris, the star of Erin Dionne's Models Don't Eat Chocolate Cookies.

For the record, Celeste is awesome. She's funny and clever and I kind of want to hang out with her when she grows up. I hope she moves to New York. :)

What turns you off?
Mean people. Especially Lively Carson.

What is your favorite curse word?
I don't really curse. I said "bitch" once, but my Author had to take it out of the book.

What sound or noise do you love?
The song "Ruby Red Hair," by Theo Christmas. Or the crinkling that happens when you open a bag of Oreos.

What sound or noise do you hate?
Laughter, when it's directed at me.

What profession would you like to attempt?
I think I'd be a good teacher, maybe.

What profession would you not like to do?
MODEL!

If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
I've never considered Really Big Questions before. I mean, I'm thirteen. How do I answer that? Like, if I die tomorrow? That would be awful, and I'd want God to say that He was sending me back, or something. But if I am supposed to answer it as though I were old and died, I have no idea.
