Today the beautiful and talented Shana Galen is joining us for Girls Who Wear Glasses Month! Shana’s gearing up for the release of her next book, If You Give a Rake a Ruby, out next week, and she’s taken a little time to hop in the hot seat and tell us about her favorite lady in lenses–Ariel Winter!
Welcome, Shana!

I had to get glasses when I was 13. You would have thought the world was about to end from the way I carried on. I was afraid no boy would ever ask me on a date, and everyone would call me “Four Eyes.” My mom gave me a poster of Marilyn Monroe wearing glasses and that helped. A lot.
Maybe if I’d had a role model like Ariel Winter, who plays Alex Dunphy on Modern Family, I wouldn’t have stressed so much. From pictures I’ve seen, Ariel Winter wears glasses in real life too.
Celebrate your girl who wears glasses — what makes her so fabulous?
One thing I like about the character of Alex is that she isn’t afraid to show how smart she is. When I was in school, it was cool to act like an airhead. Girls weren’t supposed to be smart. We were supposed to wear pink and be pretty.
What’s one trait you wish you could steal from your four-eyed female?
One trait I want to steal from Alex Dunphy is her prowess in math and science. I was never good at either. No surprise, I was good at English.
What lesson can we all learn from your lady in lenses?
Be true to yourself.
You’re breaking bread with your vision-impaired vixen…what question are you dying to ask?
I’d ask what her vocal training was. Since I have a three-year-old, I’ve been watching a new show about a princess named Sofia. Ariel Winter does her voice and sings too. Her voice is amazing, especially for her age.

Your turn, readers! Tell Shana and me who you had pinned to your childhood walls, and one lucky commenter (US Only) will win a copy of When You Give A Duke a Diamond!

Thanks for having me today, Sarah! I’ve loved reading everyone’s picks this month.

Good morning, ladies! I had to wear lenses at 8 and I still wear them…I would be in huge troubles without them. I’ve come to like my ‘librarian’ look, I think it suits my personality. Plus, like my hubby says, it’s great when I take my glasses off to reveal the ‘tiger’ that’s hidden in me…a nearly blind tiger, I would say LOL! Thank you for the giveaway opportunity. I’ve had One Good Earl…in my to- read list for a while. I am anxious to read it.

Great Post! My husband and I love Alex. She has some of the best lines. The scene where she visited the psychic with Gloria was great a few weeks ago. IT showed that she is cynical yet knows when to be supportive.
My girls (3.5 and 2) love Sophia and I was happy to learn that Ariel Winter is her voice. Thanks for that bit of information.
I am trying to think who was pinned to my walls as a kid – I know i had the space shuttle, an earth day poster and Michael J. Fox. LOL!!!

If you follow me back to the 1950′s you’ll probably see a picture on my wall of either Bud (played by Bill Grey) or his sister Princess (played by Elinor Donahue).
I can remember wishing Bud would take me to the local Soda Shop and us dancing the Twist while Chubby Checkers sang or doing the Stroll while The Diamonds crooned on the jukebox.
Of course Princess (Elinor Donahue) would be there are well looking so pretty in her poodle skirt and wearing her new saddle shoes! How I envied her because she was older than I was and already allowed to date!
Unfortunately I would have been the only one in the Soda Shop who was wearing glasses!

Oops! For those of you (probably most of you) who are too young to know Bill and Princess were brother and sister on Father Knows Best and they also had a younger sister Kitten (played by Lauren Chapin and who was probably the same age as I was!).

My favorite girl with glasses is my beautiful daughter. She can actually see now, so they’ve given her a lot of confidence!!

Mina, I love it when a woman whips off her glasses and shakes her hair out. Fun!

Amy, when you watch Sofia next time, you’ll recognize her voice. She sings so beautifully!
February 26th, 2013 at 3:33 pm
Jeanne, what fun! You know those saddle shoes are back in style–some of the retro-looking glasses too.
February 26th, 2013 at 3:34 pm
Denise, you and I must be the same age. I had those same posters!
February 26th, 2013 at 3:35 pm
Carrie, I remember when I first got glasses. I thought, wow! THIS is what everyone else sees?
February 26th, 2013 at 4:30 pm
I never had any posters on my walls! I was always very secretive about who I liked– even when it came to celebrities! Haha ;-)

I usually don’t pin pictures of people to my wall, but I will stick other things on it – glow-in-the-dark stickers, doodles, anything else. I’m weird that way.

Chelsea, I more than made up for it. When I had a crush, I would put a sign on my wall proclaiming it. All through middle school I had I LOVE DAVID WALD on my wall in huge letters.

Bridget, I used to like every inch of wall space covered. When I became a teacher, I covered every inch of wall with pictures of animals, flowers, landscapes, authors, educational posters. My students always had something to look at if I got boring.

I had a poster of Herman’s Hermits on my bedroom wall, wait that’s really dating me isn’t it, darn. :D

My favorite girl in glasses in Minerva from Tessa Dare’s Spindle Cove series. If I can remember correctly it was Minerva but it has been a bit since I read the series.

Barbara, maybe you just really liked the classics. hey, that’s a good way to look at it–you’re a classic! Oh, well. I get stares from kids if I mention Shawn Cassidy.
February 26th, 2013 at 9:07 pm
Danielle, I think it was Minerva. I like her too.
February 26th, 2013 at 9:59 pm
I had pictures of my friends and family.. okay, AND a poster of the X files tv show lol!
February 26th, 2013 at 11:43 pm
Until my teenage years, I don’t remember having anyone on my walls. But when I was a teen, I had all the “hairbands” up there….Bon Jovi, Def Lepard, Poison, Winger, Metallica, etc
February 27th, 2013 at 8:02 am
Erika, how could I forget X Files? I loved that show!
February 27th, 2013 at 8:03 am
June, I always felt weird liking any guys who had longer hair than I did–or who wore more makeup!
February 28th, 2013 at 7:09 pm
I had pictures of Elvis all over my walls. :)

I’m embarrassed to say this, but I had Barry Manilow on my wall.
